FROM THE BACK COVER:
This history is about the courage, dedication and sacrifice of ordinary Canadians who performed extra ordinary deeds. The courage to defend ones family, home, or country is easily understood.
The courage needed to cross an ocean, to fight in a land where most had never been, to sometimes die in the liberation of people they had never met, to endure extremes of weather, to be away from family for years and to age a lifetime in that period; that is a courage that cannot easily be understood.
Courage was never wanting in The Garry’s. That courage came from the comradeship of being soldiers in a regiment. The Fort Garry Horse was and is such a regiment. It is difficult to explain this bonding of souls. Yet it is common in all regiments, air squadrons and ships. When the world about them is exploding in fire and destruction, the soldiers only companion is the soldier next to him.
At that moment in time, their world does not extend past the boundaries of the regiment. It is this regimental family that gives each member the sense of gallantry, of belonging, of protection and of comradeship. This history gives insight into the last 100 years of this regiment of cavalry, of tanks and of light armour.
