The Role of the Fort Garry Horse
The Fort Garry Horse is an Armoured Cavalry unit in the Canadian Army Reserve based at Lieutenant-Colonel Harcus Strachan, VC, MC Armoury (formerly called McGregor Armoury) in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
As an Armoured Cavalry Regiment, part of 38 Canadian Brigade Group, our role is to shape and define the battlefield by informing and protecting the commander’s manoeuvre space and defeating the enemy through mounted manoeuvre. To do this we use light, highly mobile vehicles such as the Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen above in conjunction with communications and surveillance equipment.
As of 2018, we have added the new Tactical Armoured Patrol Vehicle (TAPV) to our fleet.
Co-Located with the FGH at Strachan Armoury is 31 Engineer Squadron, a part of 38 Combat Engineer Regiment. The role of Engineers is to permit friendly forces to live, move and fight on the field of battle and to deny the same to the enemy. The secondary role of Engineers is to fight as infantry when required.
